Naturopathic Medicine is founded on the principle Vis Medicatrix Naturae - The Healing Power of Nature. Naturopathic Medicine uses natural methods and substances to support and stimulate the body's inherent self-healing process.

It takes a minimum of three years premedical studies at a university, followed by four years at a recognized College of Naturopathic Medicine to become a Naturopathic Physician. The schooling is similar to "regular" Medical Schools but includes extensive training in Botanical Medicine, Homeopathy, Acupuncture and Clinical Nutrition. Upon graduation, students receive a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) degree, and are licensed by the Province or State in which they practice.

Naturopathic Medicine approaches the person as a whole, placing equal importance on the person's physical, mental and emotional components. The resulting treatment reaches beyond easing symptoms, but through natural methods, discovers their actual cause. Treating the source produces a curative effect.
